Updated 26 October 2026
KenGen will pay a first and final dividend of KSh 0.75 per share for the year to June 30, 2026. The register closes on October 29, 2026, and the money is due on January 21, 2027. That is down from KSh 0.90 a year earlier, which matched the company’s 2008 record. Only those two KSh 0.90 payouts have been higher than this year’s dividend.

What the history shows
- There is a gap. KenGen’s own table goes straight from the 2015 final dividend to the 2018 final dividend, so no dividend appears for the 2016 and 2017 financial years.
- Only one interim, ever. KenGen paid an interim dividend once, in 2007. Since then it has paid one dividend a year, after the full-year results.
- The recent jump. The payout went from KSh 0.20 for 2022 to KSh 0.30, then KSh 0.65, then KSh 0.90 for 2025. The 2026 figure of KSh 0.75 breaks that run but stays well above anything paid between 2009 and 2023.
- The calendar moved. KenGen used to close its books in November or December and pay in January or February. The 2026 register closes in October, the earliest since the 2019 dividend (closed October 23, 2020), but payment still falls in January.
Key Dates for the 2026 KenGen Dividend
- Book closure, October 29, 2026. Shareholders whose names are on KenGen’s register on this date get the dividend. Shares bought on the NSE take a few working days to settle into your CDS account, so a purchase made on or just before October 29 may not count. Ask your stockbroker for the last trading day that still qualifies.
- Annual General Meeting. KenGen’s dividend is approved by shareholders at the AGM, which is called with a 21-day notice in national newspapers and on the company website. The 2025 AGM was held electronically on December 4, 2025.
- Payment, January 21, 2027. Money goes to the bank account or M-Pesa number linked to your CDS account or registered with the share registrar.
How Much Will You Receive?
Multiply the number of shares you hold on the book closure date by KSh 0.75, then deduct withholding tax. KRA’s withholding tax table lists 5% for a resident qualifying dividend and for East African Community citizens, 10% for other resident payees, and 15% for non-residents. Your CDS account statement or the payment advice will show the rate applied to you.
| Shares held | Gross dividend | Less 5% tax | Net, at 5% | Net, at 15% (non-resident) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | KSh 750 | KSh 37.50 | KSh 712.50 | KSh 637.50 |
| 10,000 | KSh 7,500 | KSh 375 | KSh 7,125 | KSh 6,375 |
| 50,000 | KSh 37,500 | KSh 1,875 | KSh 35,625 | KSh 31,875 |
| 100,000 | KSh 75,000 | KSh 3,750 | KSh 71,250 | KSh 63,750 |
How to Work Out KenGen’s Dividend Yield
Dividend yield is the dividend divided by the share price, times 100. KenGen’s price moves every trading day, so check the NSE price on the day you are deciding, then use this formula:
Yield = (KSh 0.75 ÷ share price) × 100
As an example only, at a price of KSh 10 the yield would be 7.5%, and at KSh 12 it would be 6.25%. A yield worked out on last year’s dividend tells you what you would have earned, not what you will earn next year. KenGen says dividends depend on profitability, cash flow, capital spending plans and approval by the board and shareholders.
How KenGen Pays Its Dividend
- Your shares sit in a CDS account. KenGen shares are immobilised and held electronically at CDSC. The company says physical share certificates are generally not issued.
- Keep your payment details current. A payment can fail if your bank details or phone number are out of date. Update them through your stockbroker or the share registrar well before January 21.
- Check that it arrived. Look at your bank or M-Pesa statement on or after the payment date, and compare it with your shareholding on October 29.
- Unclaimed dividends. If you have older KenGen dividends you never received, contact the registrar with your CDS account number and ID.
How to Buy KenGen Shares
KenGen says its shares can be bought and sold through licensed trading participants of the NSE, meaning stockbrokers and investment banks. You open a CDS account through the broker, fund it, and place an order using the ticker KEGN. Our guide to how to buy shares on the NSE walks through the full process, and the guide to buying IPO shares in Kenya covers new listings. If you would rather hold a basket of shares, see our explainer on ETFs on the NSE.
How KenGen Compares With Other NSE Payers
KenGen’s payout per share is small in shilling terms because its share price is low, so compare yields rather than the headline figure. Our pages on Safaricom dividend history, KCB dividend history and EABL dividend history use the same layout, so you can line up the dates and amounts side by side.
