December Budget Planner Kenya 2026: Plan Holiday Spending

December budget planner Kenya 2026: a step-by-step holiday spending plan with real SGR fares, school fees for January, holiday dates and a fill-in budget table.

December Budget Planner Kenya 2026: Plan Holiday Spending

Updated 1 November 2026

A December budget planner for Kenya starts with one rule: plan December and January together. December pay often lands early, the festive season eats most of it, and January then brings school fees, rent and the long wait to the next salary. This December budget planner Kenya guide walks you through a seven-step holiday spending plan, using real, dated costs where they are published (SGR fares, gazetted school fees, holiday dates) and a fill-in table you can copy.

December 2026 at a glance: the dates that shape your budget

Under the Public Holidays Act, Jamhuri Day (12 December) and Boxing Day (26 December) both fall on a Saturday in 2026, and Christmas Day is a Friday. The Act only moves a holiday that falls on a Sunday, so there is no extra weekday off for the Saturday holidays. New Year’s Day 2027 is a Friday. Our full list of Kenya public holidays for 2026 and 2027 has the details.

Date What happens Budget impact
Late November Black Friday sales (most Kenyan retailers run them in the last week of November) Buy planned gifts early, only if the price is a real discount
Early to mid December Many employers pay December salaries early The money has to last until the end of January
Sat 12 December Jamhuri Day Banks and government offices closed
Fri 25 and Sat 26 December Christmas and Boxing Day Peak travel, food and gift spending
Fri 1 January 2027 New Year’s Day Last big spending day
Early January 2027 Schools reopen for Term 1 (the reported Ministry of Education 2027 calendar puts opening on 4 January; confirm with your school) Fees, uniform, books, transport
End of January January salary The end of the long stretch

Step 1: Work out the real money you have for December and January

Write down every shilling you expect between 1 December and your January payday: December net salary, any bonus or 13th cheque, chama payouts, side income and money owed to you that will actually arrive. Use net figures, after PAYE, SHIF, NSSF and the housing levy. Our PAYE calculator shows your take-home pay if a bonus changes your tax. If you work on a public holiday, you may be owed double the normal hourly rate under the Regulation of Wages (General) Order; see holiday pay rules in Kenya.

Treat this total as the budget for two months, not one.

Step 2: Ring-fence January first

Before you plan a single gift, set aside January’s fixed costs: rent, loan repayments, transport to work, food for the month and school costs. This is where most December budgets fail.

For public senior schools, Gazette Notice No. 1449 of 2026 sets what boarding schools may charge parents: up to KSh 53,554 or KSh 40,535 a year depending on the school’s category, paid 50:30:20 across the three terms. That means a Term 1 bill of up to KSh 26,777 or KSh 20,267.50 for a boarding learner. Public day senior schools charge parents nothing in tuition. Details are in our senior school fees 2026 guide. Private school parents should use the school’s own fee letter. Add uniform, shoes, books and the trip to school.

Move the January money into a separate pot you will not touch: a money market fund, M-Shwari Lock Savings or a separate bank account. If you are short, a fee loan is an option, but compare the total cost first in our school fees loans comparison.

Step 3: Price your travel properly

Travel is usually the biggest single December cost. Use published fares, not guesses. Kenya Railways’ one-way adult Madaraka Express fares from Nairobi to Mombasa are KSh 1,500 in Economy and KSh 4,500 in First Class (checked October 2026 on the official Kenya Railways booking site). Children aged 3 to 11 pay half and under-threes travel free, so a family of two adults and two children pays KSh 4,500 one way in Economy, or KSh 9,000 return. SGR tickets open 60 days before travel and December trains fill early; see how to book SGR tickets online.

For road trips, budget fuel using the current EPRA pump price for your town (EPRA reviews prices on the 14th of each month, so the 14 December review sets prices for most of the holiday), plus parking and any tolls. For upcountry trips by bus or matatu, expect higher fares in the week before Christmas and book or buy early.

Step 4: Set gift, food and event limits

Decide a total for gifts, then divide it by the number of people. Write the names down. A fixed number per person stops impulse buying. Do the same for food: list the big meals (Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve), the number of guests and a shopping list for each. Agree contributions in advance if family will share the cost.

Shopping online? Check the seller and the real discount first: our guides to Black Friday 2026 in Kenya and online shopping scams show how.

Step 5: December budget planner Kenya fill-in table

This December budget planner Kenya households can copy works for a single person or a family. Copy the table into your notes app or a spreadsheet. Fill in the “Planned” column now and the “Actual” column as you spend.

Category Planned (KSh) Actual (KSh) Notes
January rent and bills (ring-fenced) Move to a separate account first
Term 1 school fees and supplies (ring-fenced) Use the school fee letter
Loan repayments Dec and Jan Missing one costs more than any gift
Travel (fares, fuel, parking) Use official fares
Accommodation Book refundable rates
Food and drinks for festive meals One list per meal
Gifts Total ÷ number of people
Events, outings and kids’ camps Tickets bought early are cheaper
Family support and church contributions Agree amounts in advance
Buffer (5 to 10% of the total) For the things you forgot
Total Must be below Step 1 money

Step 6: Avoid the expensive December traps

  • Borrowing for the festive season. Fuliza, mobile loan apps and instalment plans are easy to take in December and hard to clear in January. Read the real cost in Fuliza charges 2026 before you overdraw.
  • Bank and M-Pesa downtime. Banks close on public holidays and some services have maintenance windows. See bank and M-Pesa hours over the holidays.
  • Ticket touts. Kenya Railways warns passengers not to buy SGR tickets outside its official channels.
  • “Too good” holiday deals on WhatsApp and Facebook that ask for a deposit to a personal number.

Step 7: Track spending weekly

Every Sunday in December, check your M-Pesa statement and bank app against the table. If one category is over, cut another. Stop when the planned total is spent; the January pot stays locked.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I budget for December in Kenya?

There is no single figure. Start from the money you will actually receive between 1 December and your January payday, set aside January rent, loans and school fees first, and plan December spending from what is left.

Is 14 December 2026 a holiday because Jamhuri Day is on a Saturday?

No. The Public Holidays Act only moves a holiday that falls on a Sunday, so Jamhuri Day stays on Saturday 12 December unless the Government gazettes a change.

When do schools open in January 2027?

The reported Ministry of Education 2027 calendar has Term 1 opening on 4 January 2027. Confirm the reporting date with your child’s school.

How much is the SGR from Nairobi to Mombasa in December?

Kenya Railways’ published adult one-way fare is KSh 1,500 in Economy and KSh 4,500 in First Class. Children aged 3 to 11 pay half fare.

How can I save money over Christmas in Kenya?

Book travel early on official channels, set a per-person gift limit, share festive meal costs, avoid borrowing, and keep January money in a separate account.
