KCB M-Pesa: Loans and Savings on Your M-Pesa Menu

KCB M-Pesa: Loans and Savings on Your M-Pesa Menu

Updated 18 October 2026

KCB M-Pesa is a bank account run by KCB Bank and linked to your M-Pesa line. It lets you borrow small loans and save money without visiting a branch, filling forms or carrying documents. Everything happens on your phone through the M-Pesa menu. Alongside M-Shwari, it is one of the two main bank backed loan and savings products built into M-Pesa. This guide explains what KCB M-Pesa offers, how loan limits are set, what borrowing costs, how savings work and how to use it responsibly.

What KCB M-Pesa Offers

  • Loans sent straight to M-Pesa, with a one month repayment term.
  • Savings, including a Target Savings account where you set a goal and a time period.
  • Account management on your phone, including balance checks and mini statements.

How Your Loan Limit Is Set

Your limit depends on how you use M-Pesa and other Safaricom services, how long you have been a customer and your repayment record with KCB M-Pesa. New users often start with a small limit. Repaying on time, using M-Pesa regularly and saving in the account can help your limit grow over time. Late repayment does the opposite and can lead to your account being reported to credit reference bureaus.

What a Loan Costs

KCB charges a fee for each one month loan. The exact charge is shown on screen when you request the loan, before you enter your PIN, and it is listed on KCB’s product information. Check the current rate each time before you borrow, because pricing can change. Compare it with Fuliza and M-Shwari so you use the cheapest option for your situation. Remember that excise duty may also apply to loan fees under Kenyan tax law.

Target Savings

Feature Detail
Target amount Above KSh 1,000
Period One to 12 months
Minimum first deposit KSh 50

Target Savings is useful for specific goals such as school fees, rent deposits or stock for a business. Because you choose a target and period, it encourages discipline.

How to Get Started

Find KCB M-Pesa on your M-Pesa menu under Loans and Savings, either on the SIM toolkit or in the M-Pesa app. Activate it by accepting the terms. Step by step instructions are in our KCB M-Pesa application guide on Business Radar.

Repaying Your Loan

  1. Go to M-Pesa, Loans and Savings, KCB M-Pesa.
  2. Select Loan, then Pay Loan.
  3. Choose to pay from M-Pesa and enter the amount.
  4. Confirm with your PIN.

You can repay early or in parts. If the loan is overdue, KCB may recover the amount from your KCB M-Pesa savings or your M-Pesa wallet, and late payment can affect your credit record.

Using KCB M-Pesa Responsibly

  • Borrow for needs, not wants. A one month loan is best for a short cash gap you know how to fill.
  • Do not borrow to repay another lender. Rolling loans between apps quickly becomes a debt trap.
  • Repay before the due date to protect your limit and your credit record.
  • Check your CRB status from time to time with our guide to checking CRB status.

KCB M-Pesa or M-Shwari?

Both are bank accounts linked to M-Pesa with short term loans and savings. M-Shwari is run by NCBA, and KCB M-Pesa by KCB. Limits are set separately, so you may get a higher limit on one than the other. Compare the fee shown on screen for the same amount before choosing.

Who KCB M-Pesa Suits

KCB M-Pesa suits salaried people who occasionally run short before payday, small traders who need a quick top up for stock and anyone who wants a simple savings account with a goal. It is less suitable for large or long term borrowing. For school fees, building, a car or business expansion, a SACCO loan or a bank loan with a longer term is usually cheaper and easier to repay, because the cost is spread over many months instead of one. Think of KCB M-Pesa as a short bridge, not a long term financing tool, and use its savings side to build a cushion so you need to borrow less often.
