Kenya Airways (KQ) is moving its in-flight duty-free shopping to a digital platform from November 1, 2026, letting passengers order from an expanded catalogue up to 40 days before departure and have purchases delivered to their seats, Business Daily reported on October 31. The service is run under a five-year partnership with Safari Duty Free.
How Kenya Airways duty free will work
- Pre-order window: up to 40 days before your flight.
- Delivery: items are brought to your seat on board.
- Prices: up to 15% lower than airport duty-free shops, according to the partners.
- Range: international brands plus Kenyan and African products, beauty and skincare, fragrances, electronics, fashion accessories and travel items.
“With Safari Duty Free, we are creating a modern retail experience that begins before take-off and continues seamlessly onboard,” said Julius Thairu, KQ’s chief commercial and customer officer. KQ’s head of inflight and catering, Pauline Kihara, said a digital catalogue gives passengers more time to compare and plan purchases than browsing a trolley during the flight.
Who is buying
Kihara said duty-free uptake is currently stronger in Economy Class, with Business Class seen as having “significant growth potential”. Safari Duty Free Managing Director Vivek Mehra said younger travellers are driving demand for beauty, skincare, lifestyle and travel products, while fragrances and confectionery remain popular.
A shop window for Kenyan brands
KQ says the platform will also promote Kenyan and other African products. The current range includes Procera Gin, Wamama Wetu beaded crafts and East African Breweries products. For local manufacturers and craft businesses, an airline catalogue offers exposure to international travellers on KQ’s network. Businesses interested in supplying would need to approach Safari Duty Free, which manages the range.
Why airlines are pushing retail
Airlines are chasing ancillary revenue, meaning money from baggage, seat selection, meals and retail on top of ticket sales. The International Air Transport Association projected in June 2026 that global airline ancillary revenue would rise 12.6% to US$165 billion this year, faster than the 9.2% growth expected in passenger ticket revenue to US$839 billion.

What travellers should know
- Allowances still apply: duty-free purchases are tax-free at the point of sale, but customs allowances at your destination still apply. Arriving in Kenya, goods above the passenger allowance may attract duty. Our guide on KRA duty on goods from abroad explains how it is charged.
- Liquids rules: sealed duty-free bags help when connecting, but rules vary by airport, so check before buying liquids on a multi-leg trip.
- Changes and refunds: check the platform’s terms for cancelled flights, seat changes and returns before ordering.
