KRB Sacco Loans 2026: Development, Sharia-Compliant and Instant Loan Rates and Rules

Updated 31 October 2026

KRB Sacco, started in 2003 by Kenya Roads Board staff, charges 1% a month on a reducing balance for most of its loans: Development Loan 1 (up to KSh 3 million over 60 months), Investment, School Fees, Emergency and Flexi loans. The larger Development Loan 2 lends up to KSh 6 million at 14% a year, and an Instant Loan of up to KSh 50,000 costs 5% a month. Members can also take Sharia-compliant loans with no interest, for a one-off 7.5% processing fee. All terms come from KRB Sacco’s products page, checked on October 31, 2026.

Members who choose Sharia-compliant loans earn no interest on their deposits. The Sacco says interest on deposits has averaged 10% over the last three years.

Who qualifies

  • You must be a current, paid-up member for at least six months.
  • Permanent staff at KRB, current or former, can borrow up to 3 times their shares and deposits in total.
  • Short-term KRB staff can borrow 1 times their deposits, plus whatever they can repay before their contract ends, up to the same 3-times cap.
  • Members from outside KRB can borrow up to 2 times their shares.
  • Total deductions must stay within two-thirds of your statutory salary, in line with the Employment Act.

Guarantors and security

Development loans need at least four guarantors whose combined deposits equal or exceed the loan. Other loans need at least two guarantors with combined deposits equal to the loan. A member who already has a loan and has guaranteed three development loans cannot guarantee another. The total loans anyone guarantees must stay within 1.5 times their own shares and deposits. Other accepted security includes your own deposits, terminal dues, and car logbooks or title deeds where the committee approves. Instant loans need no security.

Defaults and refinancing

A loan is in default if an instalment is 15 days late. If it stays unpaid for more than three months, the Sacco may ask your guarantors to pay. Refinancing an existing development loan is allowed only when the Sacco has spare cash, and no more than once a year. When money is tight, emergency loans, first-time borrowers and small loans under KSh 100,000 get priority.

What it costs: an example

Here is our own estimate using standard amortisation, not a Sacco quote. A KSh 2 million Development Loan 1 at 1% a month over 60 months costs about KSh 44,500 a month and roughly KSh 669,000 in interest. The same amount on Development Loan 2 at 14% a year costs about KSh 46,500 a month and roughly KSh 792,000. A Sharia-compliant loan of KSh 2 million would carry a one-off fee of KSh 150,000 instead of interest. See our reducing-balance calculator guide for the method.

Savings and contacts

Member shares cost a minimum of KSh 3,000, paid once and non-refundable, and the minimum monthly deposit is KSh 3,500. KRB Sacco is on the 3rd floor of Kenya Re Towers, off Ragati Road, Upper Hill, Nairobi (P.O. Box 73718-00200). Call 020 498 0181 or email krbsacco@krb.go.ke.
