  2. In person: visit the Uasin Gishu County Service Centre, a one-stop office that handles business permits together with fire compliance, public health, signage and other county payments.
  3. Revenue and licensing officers may visit your premises to confirm your details and help you complete the permit.
  4. Pay the assessed fees and keep the permit displayed at your business.

The common steps across counties, including registering the business and getting a KRA PIN first, are in how to apply for a Single Business Permit.

Rules to watch

  • Apply on time: a late application in Eldoret municipality costs KSh600 instead of KSh300.
  • Fake permits: displaying a fake permit carries a KSh50,000 penalty.
  • Cooperate with officers: failing to meet requirements risks penalties or disruption to your business.

Business mapping

The county has been mapping businesses as it clears the way for permits for the 2026 financial year, according to county statements cited by Ask Gava. Mapping is how counties find businesses that are trading without permits, so expect visits from revenue officers in busy areas of Eldoret and the townships.

How Uasin Gishu compares

Eldoret’s small-trader fee of KSh5,950 is the same as Kakamega municipality’s and below Kisumu City’s KSh10,000, but well above the KSh3,000 charged in Malindi and Kilifi town. Outside the municipality, rates fall to KSh3,000 to KSh4,000, which makes township and sub-county locations cheaper for small traders.

Eldoret is a major transport and agricultural hub on the Northern Corridor, so many businesses there serve farmers, transporters and traders heading to Uganda. With new freight options such as the CMA CGM SGR container train to Nairobi, logistics around the corridor continue to change. Compare permit costs in Kakamega County before choosing where to set up.
