Updated 31 October 2026
How much it costs to hike Mount Kenya starts with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) park fee: KSh800 per adult per day for East African citizens, KSh1,100 for Kenya residents and US$70 for non-residents. A typical summit trek to Point Lenana takes four to five days, so park fees alone come to about KSh3,200–4,000 for a Kenyan adult, before camping or hut accommodation, guides, porters, food and transport. Here are the official fees and how to budget for the rest.
Updated October 2026. Fees from the KWS conservation fees schedule.
Mount Kenya National Park fees (per person per day)
| Visitor | Adult | Child/Student |
|---|---|---|
| East African citizen | KSh800 | KSh400 |
| Kenya resident | KSh1,100 | KSh550 |
| Non-resident | US$70 | US$35 |
| African citizen | US$30 | US$15 |
KWS defines a child as aged 5 to under 18; children under five enter free. Fees are charged per 24-hour entry, so multiply by the number of days you spend in the park.
KWS camping fees
| Campsite type | East African adult | Kenya resident adult | Non-resident adult |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public campsite (parks other than Amboseli and Nakuru) | KSh200 | KSh300 | US$20 |
| Special campsite (parks other than Amboseli and Nakuru) | KSh250 | KSh350 | US$35 |
Special campsites also carry a non-refundable reservation fee of KSh10,000 per week. Many trekkers instead stay in the mountain huts and camps along the routes, which are privately run or booked through operators; get prices directly.

Other costs to budget for
- Guide: strongly recommended, and expected on most routes. Use a guide registered with the park or a reputable operator.
- Porters and cook: optional, but most groups use them on multi-day treks.
- Accommodation on the mountain: huts or camping fees per night.
- Food and water treatment.
- Transport to the gate (Naro Moru, Sirimon or Chogoria) from Nairobi or Nanyuki.
- Gear: warm layers, waterproofs, sleeping bag rated for freezing nights, boots. Hiring is possible in Nanyuki and Naro Moru.
- Tips for guides and porters.
Get at least two written quotes from operators that list exactly what is included, and check whether park fees are inside the package or extra.
How to pay KWS fees
KWS fees are paid cashless, through eCitizen or KWS’s payment channels, before or at the gate. Our step-by-step guide shows how to pay KWS park fees through eCitizen. Carry your ID or passport, and student ID if you are claiming the student rate.
Main routes
- Sirimon: gentler gradient on the north-west side; popular for acclimatisation.
- Naro Moru: the most direct route from the west, with the steep “vertical bog” section.
- Chogoria: on the east side, known for its scenery, often used for descent.
Point Lenana (4,985m) is the trekking summit. Batian and Nelion need technical climbing skills. Altitude sickness is a real risk, so plan an extra day to acclimatise.
Tips to keep the trip affordable
Travel as a group so transport, guide and cook costs are shared. Trek outside the busiest holiday weeks, when operators are more willing to negotiate. Carry your own snacks and water purification tablets rather than buying on the mountain. Hire heavy gear instead of buying it if you only plan one climb. Finally, budget for an extra night in Nanyuki or Naro Moru before the trek; a good rest and an early start improve your chances of reaching Point Lenana and reduce the risk of altitude problems that can cut a trip short.
