Every loan has a KSh 1,000 processing fee. Most also charge insurance of 0.5% of the net loan. On the New Premier Loan, the 0.5% insurance is worked out on net take-home pay, and members must contribute at least 0.2% of the loan each month.

Which loan suits which need

  • Big projects: the Development Loan is the cheapest long loan at 1% a month over 5 years, and it lends 4 times your deposits. The Diamond Loan lends more (up to KSh 50 million) and gives you 7 years, but it costs 1.15% and lends only 3 times your deposits.
  • Buying land: the Shamba Loan covers plots anywhere in Kenya, whether urban, peri-urban or rural farmland. It lends up to 5 times your deposits, and the land you buy is the security. Groups can apply too.
  • Insurance premiums: the Bima Loan pays for cover on vehicles, motorbikes, household goods, buildings and business stock. The Sacco says this is not limited to CIC policies. It must be fully backed by your deposits.
  • Emergencies and school fees: the Emergency and Education loans cost 1% a month over 12 months, and both can be topped up easily.

What a Sheria loan costs: worked examples

These are our own estimates using standard amortisation formulas, not Sacco quotes. A KSh 2 million Development Loan at 1% a month over 60 months costs about KSh 44,500 a month and roughly KSh 669,000 in total interest. A KSh 2 million Diamond Loan at 1.15% a month over 84 months lowers the payment to about KSh 37,300 but raises total interest to about KSh 1.13 million. Add the KSh 1,000 processing fee and 0.5% insurance (KSh 10,000 on KSh 2 million).

How to apply

You must be a member who makes the minimum monthly contribution. Apply through the “Apply Now” links on the Sacco’s loan page, or contact Sheria Sacco on 020 780 1500. Guarantor rules follow the Sacco’s credit policy, and some loans (Emergency, Refinancing and Bima) must be fully backed by deposits.
