What these rates cost in practice
Flat and reducing-balance rates are not the same. On the 12-month Emergency Loan, 1% a month flat on KSh 100,000 works out to KSh 12,000 in interest, because it is charged on the full amount for the whole year. On the Development Loan, 1% a month on a reducing balance is charged only on what you still owe, so the total interest over 12 months would be about KSh 6,600. These figures are our own estimates using standard loan formulas, not Sacco quotes. Our Sacco loan comparison shows how Harambee compares with other big Saccos.
The 7-day YOLO loan is expensive if you use it often. Paying 10% for one week costs far more over a year than any BOSA loan, so keep it for genuine emergencies.
Which Harambee Sacco loan should you pick?
- Just joined: the Karibu Loan is open one month after joining, so you skip the usual six-month wait. Apply with your ID and your last two months’ certified payslips.
- Building or a big project: Jisaidie (60 months) or Inuka 84/96, which can also buy off expensive bank loans. Inuka 96 charges a 10% bridging commission on bank or third-party balances it clears.
- School fees: the School Fees Loan, which needs no fee structure or school letter and pays out within about two hours of approval.
- Buying farmland: the Shamba Loan, through Harambee Investment Cooperative Society (HICS). The Sacco keeps the title deed until the loan is cleared.
- Buying or building a home: see the Harambee Home Loan and Jenga Loan, fixed at 8% to 9% a year.
