What these rates mean
Here is our own estimate, not a Sacco quote. KSh 300,000 on the Normal Loan at 1% a month over 36 months costs about KSh 9,960 a month and roughly KSh 58,700 in total interest. The same amount as a Karibu Loan at 1.5% over 24 months costs about KSh 15,000 a month and roughly KSh 59,400 in interest, and one third of it is put into shares. If you are new to the Sacco, the Karibu Loan gets you started, but move to the Normal Loan once you qualify.
Weekly-rate products such as Soko and Prime are expensive: 2.5% a week works out to about 10% a month. Use them only for very short trading gaps.
