Mobile loans and salary advance

  • M-Kimisitu: up to KSh 300,000 over 6 months at 7% a month. You can borrow straight away as long as you have money in your deposit account, and top-ups are charged 2.5% of the loan balance.
  • Salary Advance: up to 80% of net salary, rising to a KSh 500,000 limit, with a one-off 6% charged upfront and repayment over 4 months. Your salary must have gone through FOSA for at least one month.

At 7% a month, M-Kimisitu works out to about 84% a year at simple rates. Over the same period, a 12% Emergency Loan is far cheaper if you can wait for approval.

Asset finance rules

Vehicles must be less than 8 years old. For Toyotas, the car can secure 70% of the loan and guarantors or other security must cover the remaining 30%. For other makes the split is 60/40. The loan limit is KSh 10 million over 48 months.

Home loans: Makao Halisi vs KMRC

The KMRC product is the cheaper option at 9%, but it only covers buying or building a residential home, up to KSh 10.5 million. Its 1% processing fee is the same as the terms explained in our KMRC mortgage guide. Makao Halisi costs 12%, but it goes up to KSh 50 million and also finances land and commercial property.

Here is our own estimate, not a Sacco quote. KSh 5 million at 9% over 25 years is about KSh 42,000 a month. At 12% over 12 years (Makao Halisi’s 144 months), it is about KSh 65,700 a month.

Tusonge Mbele: loans for chamas

Registered chamas can borrow for land and housing projects. Monthly repayments are based on the group’s contributions. You need six months of consistent contributions, a sealed application form, memorandum and articles, a sealed resolution to borrow, a contribution schedule, and either a title and sale agreement or a bill of quantities. Our guide to the best banks for chamas compares other options.
