Updated 31 October 2026
A realistic wedding budget in Kenya starts with one number, your guest count, because venue size, catering, cake, chairs, tents and transport all scale with it. This guide shows how to build the budget line by line, using real published prices where they exist (such as official marriage fees and per-kilo cake prices), and how to get firm quotes for the rest instead of relying on guesswork.
Updated October 2026.
Step 1: Fix your guest count, then add a buffer
Kenyan weddings tend to grow once both families and church or chama members are involved. Write your first list, then add 10–20% as a buffer. Every later quote should use this number.
Step 2: List every cost line
| Cost line | Priced by | How to get a real figure |
|---|---|---|
| Marriage registration | Fixed fees | Official eCitizen fees (below) |
| Venue | Package or per guest | Written quote from 3 venues for your date |
| Catering | Per plate | Quote per plate × guests, including service staff |
| Tents, chairs, décor | Package or per item | Itemised quote |
| Wedding cake | Per kilo | Published per-kg prices × kilos needed |
| Attire, hair and make-up | Per person | Quotes from designers and stylists |
| Photography and video | Package | Package with hours and deliverables in writing |
| Transport | Per vehicle or per trip | Quotes for buses for guests and cars for the bridal party |
| Sound, MC and entertainment | Package | Quote with hours included |
Step 3: Paperwork costs you can price today
For a civil marriage by notice, the Office of the Attorney General lists a KSh600 notice fee after approval, then a further KSh3,300 online fee before booking solemnisation, with at least 21 days’ notice. Full steps and documents are in our civil marriage guide. Church weddings also need registration under the Marriage Act; ask your church about its own fees.
Step 4: Price the cake by kilo
Wedding cakes in Kenya are almost always priced per kilogram. A common rule is about 1kg for every 8 to 12 guests when served in small portions. As a real benchmark, Norie’s Cake Atelier’s wedding cake price guide (a Machakos bakery) publishes these October 2026 estimates before decoration and delivery:
| Guests | Approx. cake | Classic range | Signature range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | about 5kg | about KES 12,500 | about KES 14,000 |
| 100 | about 10kg | about KES 25,000 | about KES 28,000 |
| 200 | about 20kg | about KES 50,000 | about KES 56,000 |
Other bakers will quote differently, so get two or three quotes. A money-saving approach many couples use: a smaller display cake plus plain sheet cake or pastries for the rest of the guests. For how bakers set their prices, see how to price cakes in Kenya.
Step 5: Shortlist venues by capacity
Choose a venue that fits your guest count with room for tents, a catering line, a dance floor and parking for buses. Ask each venue for: its capacity, what the package includes (chairs, tents, décor, catering), whether outside caterers are allowed, alcohol rules, rain backup and the deposit and cancellation terms. For couples looking outside Nairobi, this shortlist of wedding venues in Machakos lists garden venues with capacities taken from the venues’ own websites.
Step 6: Build the budget and a contingency
- Enter every written quote in a spreadsheet.
- Add a 10% contingency for last-minute guests, transport and extras.
- Agree who pays for what: couple, families, and any harambee or wedding committee contributions.
- Track deposits paid and balances due by date.
Step 7: Paying for it without debt stress
If you are saving over several months, a money market fund keeps the money accessible and earning. Avoid funding a wedding with expensive short-term loans; if you must borrow, compare the full cost first with our sacco loan calculator guide. Committee contributions sent by M-Pesa are easier to track on a dedicated Paybill or Pochi; see Pochi, Till or Paybill.
